The former AST title has been replaced by the new SLE- Specialist Leader in Education. You may be endorsed by your headteacher to apply for any specialism e.g. a core subject English, Maths, Science, Assessment or NQT mentor, EYFS specialist. It could also be a foundation subject you specialise in. You will already be an outstanding practitioner and supporting colleagues in your own school or have had experience in supporting other schools in your chosen area of expertise. If you are passionate about being a leader of education and supporting other managers to lead then you need to prepare for a group discussion and an interview. SPAG Rainbow Writing Code supports the Year 2 Grammar Washing Line. Please see the shop. The code is to support children to edit their writing using the same colour each time. They locate each grammar feature in a given exemplar text and use colour pencils to identify them and/or underline them. Over the year the children can self assess and peer assess using this rainbow grammar code. Eventually, by the end of the year, the aim is for the children to be able to identify all the writing grammar features in their own writing or up level it and edit if they haven’t. VCHOP stands for Vocabulary, Conjunctions, Handwriting, Openers and Punctuation. This resources supports the new National Curriculum for 2014 English Writing objectives.

Great visual resources suitably differentiated for year 1. Read the Blue Balloon and sequence the pictures and use time connectives to retell. Write a list and captions using words to describe the balloon changing shape. Link to the new curriculum and used expanded noun phrases and or adjectives. Use phonics and sounds to match words to pictures. As creative starters to the unit -teachers can write a message on a helium balloon from each child and release in outdoor playground - ‘This balloon is indestructable. Please look after it!’ Wait and see if anyone replies to the message. Blow up a balloon and release in hall for inspiration to dance and movement in P.E. Also includes ideas for problem solving in maths using balloons as inspiration.

Year 2 Planning with differentiation and high order activities for literacy to support the new English curriculum. This is a suitable activity for creative writing in the traditional stories unit or as a short write for character description. Children will have the opportunity to develop and use expanded noun phrases, similes, suffixes, contractions and conjunctions to extend ideas and sentences. A good extension for year 2 is to incorporate a twist in the story and so the good characters (the three billy goats) become bad and the troll becomes good. Can be used before or after the little red riding hood unit also available by the same author on TES. There is also a grammar features success ladder included. It is designed for children to be able to self assess and peer assess when editing, and up-level their own work to meet the expected standards. Suitable for year 2 to achieve 'at' and beyond - Greater Depth standard in writing.

Teaching Dragon Poetry and descriptive writing to year 2 will be extra fun following this outstanding unit of work. There are excellent creative ideas included in here, to enthuse children into writing interesting descriptions of dragons, and supporting them to writing missing posters about different types of dragons they’ve created themselves. They will begin by going on a dragon egg hunt, write a poem about what’s inside the egg, and then use the book ‘To Tell A dragon’ to write their own poems using a similar model. Find brilliant resources that are well differentiated to meet the needs of SEN and EAL. Haps are challenged with high level vocabulary and use of similes. Suitable for the teaching of the new English curriculum and can also be easily adapted to Year 3 as the text has ambitious description. Charlie Super hero Underpants is a complete bundle and unit of work with planning and differentiated resources. This is an excellent story for reluctant boy writers. You will find three examples of Exemplar text that can be used as a model piece of writing for students to learn in the imitation stage. The newspaper recounts are set in the context of the story as well as other examples, related to sports day and a made up news event about a fox invading sports day. The children will be able to design their own superhero, write recounts or news, and also be able to make inventions linked to whatever is happening in school or around the world. Newspaper templates have been provided. Great for meeting new English curriculum expectations - wriitng for different purposes.

This is a fantastic way to include a dinosaur topic in your English unit. The resource contains an exemplar text (Instructions) with visuals aimed at the Exceeding in EYFS or Working at in year 1. The children are introduced to the story first - Harry and the bucket full of dinosaurs. It then leads on to learning instructional exemplar text (imitate) about 'How to take care of a pet dino.' This is supported by a text map to sequence and internalise language. The grammar features included are time connectives and prepositional language. The exemplar text is differentiated for SEN or EAL learners who may have little English, or limited writing ability. The unit lends itself well to imitation, innovation and invention. The children may go onto writing instructions for 'How to care for yourself ' or 'How to get ready in the morning.' They may write instructiins about caring for a class pet. There are lots of opportunities to do cross curricular and independent writing opportunities from this book e.g. my first day shopping. Excellent text for relluctant boy writers. ENJOY.

Year 2 Guided Reading Comprehension- Information Text All About Foxes. A detailed text all about foxes allows children to read at length for greater depth. Children who are working at the expected have the text broken down into smaller chunks for easier accessibility. This resource can be used in isolation as well as supporting material for the Fox unit by Margaret Wild- if its being taught in English. The guided reading questioning included looking, inference, evaluative, and overall text questions. Africa Year 2 unit about stories in a cultural setting. If you are looking for a new unit of work with excitement, culture, story, film, art links and research, - then look no further. This is a 3 week unit of work to link with a topic on Africa (or it can be taught stand alone). The planning included opportunities to learn an exemplar rewritten and condensed text using the ‘Masai and I’ story as inspiration. Children have the opportunity to imitate and innovate and then invent their own text. The resources included have excellent visuals to research from. Suitable links to real life Masai have been given as short film extracts to take notes about the cultural lifestyle, food, pets, schools of this tribe. This is an excellent and interesting unit to engage boys. Other links such as art have been made clear - whereby children learn about Kente cloth as worn by people in Kenya, create a traditional necklace and paint Masai dancers. As well as this, a guided reading text has been included in the unit to support reading for ‘working at’. Year 2 English Writing Unit This is a unit of work based on Monsters and a short clip. There are two weeks of English Fiction planning that incorporates immersion activities, imagination ideas, and opportunities for children to write simple poetry about feelings of fear. The unit then moves on to watching the short clip and planning ideas for a narrative. Children describe the monster, where it has come from and write their own adventure story. ‘The day I found monster under my bed.’ The resources includes ideas of how to use the monster theme for topic work including DT and making a pesky monster punch drink, and thinking of ideas about how to trap a monster. Please also additional linked resources called ‘How to trap a wild thing.’ in the shop for Instructions only. Their are also ideas for monster ink art and science inflatable monsters ideas in the Powerpoint. It is considered useful to set children a holiday task/project before the unit commences and this has also been included.

Year 2 Non Fiction Writing This is 14 page slide powerpoint with apt information about how to write about snails. It includes subheadings for body, eats, habitat, dangers. it gives children enough information about snails so they can research and then write their own information text about how to keep pet snails. This encourages children to apply their learning to a new context. Ideal for a topic unit in science and suitable for keeping pet African snails in class. Otherwise it can be used for English literacy non fiction unit. The text includes suitable sentence level work to incorporate year 2 grammar features such as coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. There are opportunities for children to use questions by addressing the reader e.g. Have you ever wondered how to keep pet snails?
